little
tree gallery is pleased to present the first of two summer student shows.
Earlier in the year we had an open call for show proposals, inviting
anyone currently in a Bay Area art program. The summer student show
series is designed to give students a professional gallery experience
and is a way for little tree to showcase fresh and exciting voices.
After numerous entries we choose the two best proposals, and we’re
excited to share the talent with you.
Sehwon Min’s work has an immediate power to transfix the viewer.
Ms. Min has a heightened sense of color, resulting in intense and soothing
abstractions.
Ms. Min finds her inspiration in nature. For the work in this show,
she brought her camera to local parks and took pictures of decaying
tree bark. Once home she uploaded the images to her computer and manipulated
them to her liking. Satisfied, she then started her paintings, using
the digital images as reference. The results are layered, fleshy burst
of color.
The largest of the pieces resembles an organic, spiky spine. Over five
feet tall, the work shoots tingling internal sensations down the back.
The viewer sees and feels what is hidden within us all. Yet more importantly
we are reminded of the repetitive beauty commonplace in nature.
Sehwon Min is in her last year of graduate studies in painting at the
San Francisco Art Institute, where Ms. Min also received her Post Baccalaureate.
Ms. Min received her BFA from Hong-Ik University in Seoul, South Korea.
She has shown in the Bay Area and South Korea, where she is from.
